I had so sincerely intended to post a first excerpt from the book last week. But, as often happens, life gets in the way. Now I’m shooting for this week.

But … I’ve got a really, really good reason for being such a “slacker.”

About a month ago, two very interesting and unexpected opportunities came to my attention at a time when I wasn’t looking to make a move — one part-time, the other full-time. Life has a way of throwing you those curveballs sometimes, perhaps just to see what you’ll do with them.

Although I had a sincere interest in the part-time position (Copy Editor with the local weekly – four-day weekends! – plenty of time for fiction writing!), it was the full-time opportunity (something I never thought I’d be interested in, since moving to Mount Desert Island) that seemed custom-made just for me. It offered a marriage of my passion (writing) with my expertise in traditional, social media, and online marketing, as well as some other unique opportunities for me as a writer. After careful consideration, I accepted their offer last week.

So, beginning the week of May 12, I’m the new Public Relations Manager and Development Assistant for Bar Harbor’s much beloved Jesup Memorial Library.

As if being surrounded on a daily basis by readers and writers and books in this 100+ year old treasure were not enough, I’ll have the opportunity to meet published authors, agents, editors – all kinds of people in the publishing industry, as the Jesup is known for hosting book signings and other author events throughout the year. The Jesup is also undertaking an ambitious expansion which will transport the library into the 21st century while retaining its status as a landmark in the community. Its motto is “Anchor to the Past, Chart to the Future.” What an exciting time to be joining this revered institution!

I anticipate my writing will only benefit from this total immersion in the world of books, literature, and publishing. All I can say is, “Win-win!”

And maybe “Woo-hoo!”
